While fertility often centers around females and their reproductive functionality, or lack thereof, in cases of infertility, research has shown that fertility challenges are evenly dispersed. An article on the National Institute of Health site states that "1/3 of infertility cases are related to male reproductive issues, 1/3 to female reproductive issues and 1/3 to both male and female reproductive issues or unknown factors."4 Moving forward, we will explore how diet, lifestyle/physical wellness, mental-emotional well-being, and environment play a role in our reproductive health and, therefore, our fertility. We will address how we may utilize aromatherapy and various herbs to support reproductive wellness and, thereby, support fertility.
A healthy relationship with oneself is crucial to creating optimum fertility. This should be centered around not just physical but also mental-emotional wellness. By addressing the physical and mental emotional relationship, the body can experience a more profound release of stress, traumas and tensions, thus allowing more optimal functionality. The correlation between psychological and physical wellness is clearly observed when we look at the systemic responses to distress and eustress (yes, too much joyfulness can have a negative impact on health.) Research has shown how stress impacts homeostasis by increasing oxidative stress levels, which can be described as an imbalance in reactive oxygen species and antioxidants.5 These imbalances lead to disruptions in cell function, which can then domino into systemic malfunctions, including inflammatory conditions, gastrointestinal issues, and endocrine imbalances. According to the American Psychological Association, stress can increase muscle tension and heart rate and cause hyperventilation, which triggers an increase in the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol.6 Over extended periods, this can lead to chronic disruptions in the reproductive system, including delayed ovulation and lower sperm quality, in addition to reduced libido and sex drive.
Aromatherapy can play a key role in helping to reduce stress and anxiety, thereby counteracting oxidative stress. While it is important to assess individual needs (and aromatic preferences) when selecting oils and creating blends, several oils stand out as ideal options for addressing mental-emotional challenges. The American Journal of Qualitative Research notes, "certain essential oils have been found to contribute to a calming effect throughout the CNS including that of the stress cycle involving the HPA-axis and have a positive effect on mood." Monoterpene rich oils, such as Lavandula angustifolia and Cananga odorata, can help calm the nervous system and serve as anxiolytics. Citrus oils such as Citrus bergamia, Citrus reticulata and Citrus reticulata var. amara are rich in d-limonene, which has also been shown to be highly beneficial in relieving stress. Citrus bergamia essential oil was found to reduce salivary cortisol levels after being inhaled7 Melissa officinalis and Rosa damascena are excellent choices for anxiety and depression as they are also rich in monoterpenols. However, due to their higher price point, it may be prudent to reserve their use for severe cases of anxiety and depression. In addition to utilizing essential oils to support mental-emotional wellness, individuals should assess sources of stress in their lives and develop healthy coping mechanisms. This may require the support of a psychotherapist.
