American nurse aromatherapist Pam Conrad devoted her career to Women's Health, published two books and carried out a significant pilot study that was accepted for publication in a scientific paper (Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice) in 2012.

How did you initially get involved with aromatherapy, and what made you start working with essential oils?

In 1999, I was working as a trauma and women’s health nurse in an urban university medical centre. We were opening a National Center of Excellence for Women's Health. As their complementary therapy nurse, I was on a task force of nurses and doctors in the medical centre focused on evidence-based complementary alternative medicine". As a member of this group, I was approved to take an American Holistic Nurses Association AHNA Clinical Aromatherapy course to bring this modality to our patients in the centre.

You have written two books on women’s health, what inspired you to do so?

Honestly, I had no intention of writing books. One morning, I received an email from an editor at Singing Dragon Books who had seen me present at an aromatherapy conference. They needed evidence-based books for healthcare professionals and asked me to write "Women's Health Aromatherapy". The response was positive, so with the Mental Health issue coming more in focus, my research and background in Psychiatric nursing, we decided Aromatherapy and Women's Health would be a good idea.

What was the biggest challenge in your aromatherapy career?

It was a very pioneering experience, which means most of the time, it was my internal passion and reputation that drove me to accept closed doors and walk through those that opened, even though they may not have been my first choice. In the world of nursing and aromatherapy, walls are created that can be frustrating and challenging.
